Three New Pieces on Heavy Rotation This Spring

I don’t usually buy lots of new clothes each year—instead it tends to be more strategic purchases spaced out. So far this spring, I’ve picked up a few new things that I’m really into and have been wearing quite a bit. Two of them were inexpensive or dirt cheap even, and the third is more of a long-term acquisition. Here’s what’s been on heavy rotation lately.

First, a pair of bleach white stretch jeans from mall brand American Eagle

Did I need another pair of white five-pocket pants? No. I already own a pair from Sid Mashburn (heavy, quality denim), a cotton-linen pair from Billy Reid (loose and flowy for those hot days), a pair from J.Crew (my favorite for their fabric and fit), not to mention the various off-white trousers I have which are not five-pockets (such as these from Spier & Mackay or these from Brooks Brothers).

But here’s the thing: when it comes to white pants, 1- you can never have too many pairs and 2- to each there is a season. For each of those listed above, there are different situations each pair works best; and for the all-around best pair, the ones from J.Crew, they’re old enough I’d like to reduce wear and tear on them by rotating out some others.

Anyway, the ones I got are slim-straight fit from American Eagle. They’re kind of a Franken-fabric with 4% poly and 2% elastane, but that’s fine with me. I was always against stretch in jeans, but have concluded that if you’re not trying to get authentic Japanese or Cone Mills or some other heritage milled denim that you’ll break in yourself, the stretch factor makes them infinitely more comfortable—particularly as a parent of a small child. I plan to get a light wash pair as soon as I can in this fit, I love it.

Second, a beautiful blue-green OCBD from Brooks Brothers

With news of their Garland shirt factory closure (let’s hope someone buys that place out), and rumors that Brooks Brothers itself might file for Chapter 11, now’s a good time to get that unlined, authentic OCBD goodness while we still can. Their ongoing sales during the COVID19 situation bring their staple | versions down to under $100; and the seasonal varieties they’ve made are on extra discount. This one, I got for $59. It’s a beautiful color. I’ve only had it just over a week and have worn 3-4 times already, each time on its own, not layered under a jacket or anything. That said, I anticipate wearing it with my navy or tan jackets.

Find it here available in many fits and sizes. Find all their Oxford shirts here.

And finally, I’ve been wearing the amazing new Ring Jacket double breasted “club blazer” I bought from Nashville shop Haymakers a lot.

Still waiting on replacement buttons, but in the meantime the gold does have its allure as well. I was thinking of dark brown horn, but was also considering smoked mother of pearl—any thoughts on that?

Haymakers is doing 25% off until June 1, as I’ve written; otherwise, the only other place I know you can get this jacket for sure is from Ring Jacket itself for full price here.

So those are my three new purchases I’ve been getting lots of mileage out of so far this spring. How about you? What’re you wearing a lot right now?

    1. It’s Eidos from S/S 2015. Probably one of my top 3 favorite shirts ever. Kind of a large-scale shadow stripe made of the super breathable, open-weave “Airtex” (or one like that) cotton. Keep your eyes for it on eBay and Real Real as they pop up from time to time.

  1. 1) I agree with Stefan, keep the gold bottoms, it’s a blaze! And looks great as is, embrace the “blazer”
    2) If you must replace, go with the MOP, keeping the blazer vibe (and send me the blazer buttons!)
