July 4th Menswear Sales I’m Watching

I once heard that there are 14 sale seasons in a year—holidays used to move products with slight or invented discounts on a continuous basis. That’s more than one per month!

July 4th is one such holiday for sales (and July 1st marks Canada Day, conveniently). Of course, the bizarre cycle of the clothing industry also means that many of the clothes the weather is finally warming up enough for you to wear have been put on seasonal sale—to clear inventory space for fall/winter items that will be delivered in a few weeks.

So here’s a curated round-up of the Independence Day sales I’m watching, with a couple regular old seasonal sales that have begun thrown in as well.

Mr Porter

(Recommending Mr Porter’s sale is like saying “here’s a shopping mall with sales going on inside, browse away!” because there are currently 16,000+ items on sale. So I just like to filter by brand. For instance: Beams Plus | Boglioli | Brioni | Brunello Cucinelli | Canali | Caruso | Casañer | Corridor | De Bonne Facture | De Petrillo | Doppiaa | Drake’s | Edward Green | Gitman Vintage | Giuliva Heritage | Inis Meain (don’t sleep on this linen sweater) | John Lobb | John Smedley | Johnston’s of Elgin | Kingsman | Kiton | Monitaly | Original Madras | Oris | Orlebar Brown | Orslow | Pendleton | Polo Ralph Lauren | Private White V.C. | R.M. Williams | Ralph Lauren Purple Label | RRL | Saman Amel | Sid Mashburn | The Real McCoy’s | Valstar | Veja | William Lockie | Zegna)

Spier & Mackay

(My go-to recommendation for affordable tailored clothing—in particular their tailored trousers are the absolute best value anywhere. See my linked list of recommended items from this season in particular here.)

Brooks Brothers

(We all know Brooks Brothers of old is dead, but with Michael Bastian at the helm, there are quite a few cool pieces that stand out on their own, no matter what logo is on the label—these swim shorts, for instance, are fun).

J.Crew

(Another retailer whose identity has been in flux, but again, it’s got some mojo simply by virtue of its latest creative director, Brendan Babenzien. This Wallace & Barnes chore jacket looks great, for instance.)

Todd Snyder

(If you like the Old J.Crew [whereby I mean the J.Crew of the mid-late-aughts], Todd Snyder was responsible for that in large part, so just buy all that stuff from his namesake label! I like this tipped Montauk polo, among other things.)

No Man Walks Alone

(No July 4th sale in particular here, just a great store with a normal seasonal sale.)

Cavour

(Another regular seasonal sale. Their Model 2 jacket is great, and their Model 3 trousers are too. This is the final season they’re carrying brands other than their own store brand, like Finamore, Ring Jacket, 100 Hands, so get them now while they’re still available.)

That’s it for now. I’ll add more if I come across any as the weekend progresses. Happy Independence Day!

SuitSupply’s Roma Cut—Is It Any Good?

So I ordered a Roma-cut tobacco linen suit to see how I liked it myself and whether I would recommend it. The verdict? Read on…
