What I Picked Up During Spier & Mackay’s Boxing Day Sale

It’s been a year of continuous sales, but this is probably still the best: 25% off everything at Spier & Mackay with just a couple exceptions with code BOX25. And 15% off made-to-order things like suits, jackets, and trousers (sadly, it does not include made to measure shirts) with MTO15.

I highlighted some of the key pieces in the fall/winter collection earlier in the season in a few different posts, so take a look at those for the links of stuff I liked the most for someone building a trend-proof wardrobe.

I personally bought three things during the sale.

1- Cream flannel trousers

I’ve wanted these for a long time but have just never pulled the trigger. I wear white pants all year round, primarily in the form of jeans (Sid Mashburn, American Eagle and an old pair from J.Crew are my three go-to’s). But to have a pair that are dressier to wear in the winter will be great.

2- Navy long-sleeve polo

I have no need for another navy polo, but the button-down collar on this is what ultimately enticed me. My other favorite navy polos are an old Eidos Lupo polo from 5 years ago that’s faded dramatically, and a cheap Polo Ralph Lauren from the outlet that I love as a beater. If it fits (I’m concerned about sleeve length), I’m hoping it’ll fit right in between those two.

3- Bengal stripe dress shirt

When I get dressed each morning, the shirts I most want to wear are all blue/white stripes. Super basic, I know. I have plenty in various fabrics—oxford cloth, cotton-linen, open-weave airtex, plain-weave—but I want more. At $36 after the discount, I’m hoping this will be a great everyday shirt. Plus, it’s made using one of Spier’s long spread collar options they typically only make in their custom program, which I am interested to try in person. All my favorite shirts have a more dramatically cut-away shape, and I’m interested in trying a slightly less spread collar, and this one looks pretty good.

Those three items will complement the other recent purchase I’ve made—the Natalino Neapolitan sportcoat—perfectly.

Menswear Musings’ 2020 Year in Review

It hasn’t been the year I thought it would be. Every person on earth is thinking that right…

  1. Eager to hear your thoughts on the long-sleeved navy polo. I ordered the same for myself and was surprised at how large the neck is–upwards of 16.5 inches on a Medium. Not a deal breaker for me, but larger than expected (only in the neck).

    1. The neck is why I sent it back. Perhaps it would shrink, and I contemplated washing it in hot water to get it to do so, but the sleeves were just about right out of the box and I’d heard they shrink about an inch after a cold wash. So, not worth it for me. I need to just buy Anglo-Italian’s and be done with it.
