Sid Mashburn sent an extraordinary e-mail this weekend, explaining in very plain terms that faced with closures of their stores in the best interest of public health, and a potentially serious and long-lasting economic downturn, they are running a store-wide 20% off sale. Sid and his wife Ann’s shops are some of the best and most consistent independent retail shops in the country, and I’d hate to see them go down (or have to reduce their workforce, which they explain has grown to 140 over the past 14 years significantly).
The discount code for the sale is PREVAIL. If you had your eye on those off-white natural jeans like I’ve got and love, or maybe a pair of their handsome made-in-England shoes—neither of which ever goes on sale—now would be a good time to buy some if you’re able. Not only is this an unprecedented global health situation, it’s an unprecedented sale on some great clothes that are worth their full price.
At a time like this HOW COULD — you not have told me sooner! The health situation is real, but it is also real that if you played the casino with the current odds of survival, you’d come away loaded with cash. The U.S. mortality rate is dropping as more testing becomes available, and it becomes obvious that less than 1% of people who contract the virus will die from it, sad though it may be. There will be life after covid, and it’s nice to escape to some normalcy where there is some. Thanks.

Absolutely — I did listen to economist Bob Murphy discuss some interesting things about the virus today and some of the irrational responses to it. He posited that if your entire goal as a government were to get all hands on deck in dealing with the virus, then shutting down schools actually has a deleterious effect; some 20% of healthcare workers have children, and with schools being closed many are required to stay home to care for their families rather than being on the front lines. This is especially troubling when you consider that, so far, younger people tend to fare better if they contract this virus…
Anyway, just some food for thought, albeit a bit random.
I’ve never even looked at Sid Mashburn before, but I love his attitude. The Hey Sid! Advice Column is solid gold. I came away with some music recommendations and a grenadine tie.
I bought an issue of YOLO Journal using the sale. It’s all I could justify after my wife got laid off. Ann’s recent “You Need This, I Promise” column about their daughters broke my heart, but it lent perspective, as that was the subject. My family’s discretionary spending may be halted for the time being, but we try to support our local restaurants with take out once a week. If you can, definitely support the Mashburns and any great small business, fashion or otherwise. They helped in part to shape the society that we are all missing so much.
So sorry to hear that, David. We’re all hoping this virus crashes quickly and that there can be a boom following (sort of like a post-WWII situation)—that’s my hope anyhow.
