Campbell’s of Beauly has emerged as a flagship for Highland heritage and English refinement in style and culture. There is an eternal charm to the windswept landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. The colors and landscapes of its rugged geography are a wellspring of inspiration for creative expressions across the gamut of art. And its rich cultural history, while often tragic, showcases the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of great odds, whether natural or man-made.
Through their shops, Campbell’s of Beauly serves us all with a lovely vision of those qualities, not only through the beautiful, well-made garments and furnishings they sell, but through the infectious, fun personality that comes through the Tweed Rallies and Defender blankets.
They create something wonderful and put it out in the world—and we’re all the better off for it.
I’m thrilled to showcase three of their perennial pieces.
In particular, the green Harris Tweed sportcoat, which I’ve admired on John Sugden, owner of Campbell’s of Beauly, for several years. As he told me, once when he was visiting one of the weavers of Harris Tweed, and picked what he felt was the perfect shade of green, and has just run that perpetually ever since.
It’s perfect. And the jacket is made in Italy, with the hallmarks I personally value the most—it fits great, is well made, and nobody executes a good shoulder and armhole like the Italians. I sized up from my normal size, which accommodates the gutsy thickness of the tweed and you can see the result. I normally wear a size 42 in tailoring, and am wearing size 44. I might lengthen the sleeves and bring in the waist a touch, but both would be nit-picky alterations.
The Shetland jumper is in the color they call Heather. It has a gorgeous, subtle melange of colors that make it. Authentic Shetland wool, with a crewneck that sits up on your collar just a bit. I’m wearing size Large.
The Aigas field jacket is outstanding It’s a cotton jacket with a water repellant peached finish made of nylon and polyester. So it will give you a similar level of rain resistance as a waxed cotton jacket, but it has a dry hand that won’t transfer wax to other surfaces and it’s more breathable.
I’m picky about field jackets (I don’t own any for that reason) and this one nails it in every regard. Masculine and rugged, but not shabby or overly broken-in. The waist cinch allows you to give it some shape. The fit allows it to fit comfortably over a sweater and even over a sportcoat, as you can see I do (I’m wearing size Large). The olive color is just right. The internal and external pockets are functional (the internal lower hip pockets zip; great for phone or passport or wallet). It’s lightweight enough for cool-not-cold weather, but given the sizing can function as a windbreaker outer layer when the temps drop.
One last note: with tariffs to the USA, Campbell’s is shipping DDP—they pre-pay the import duties, and include them in the shipping charges on the order screen. So it takes the uncertainty and guesswork out of the equation when you buy, though the shipping charges might look wild if you’re not aware that’s what they’re doing. If you’re uncertain about sizing and want advice, they are wonderfully helpful, lovely people, so e-mail them at [email protected] or call. Here’s the contact page.
My thanks to Campbell’s of Beauly for their support and sponsorship of my site.
